Pear-shaped Jar with lid

Description

A pear-shaped jar with a lid. The lid is stepped with an knob handle. The jar is decorated with blue lines which encircle the base, centre and neck of the jar. Between the lines the body is decorated with a curvilinear leaf pattern. Possibly Thailand.

Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); photocopy of Hunt Museum object comment sheet (17 April 1996) containing remarks made about object by Peter Francis. Under context/provenance, sheet states: '"Sawankholk'? [sic], Annanese / Indochinese / Ming era or earlier (ie pre 1633)'; notes (date unspecified) summarising comments made by Jessica Harrison Hall, curator of Chinese Ceramics at the British Museum, and Stacy Pierson, curator of the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Ceramics, London, about the jar. They think it is probably Thai. Describes aspects of the jar and comments that it is similar to Sawankhalok underglaze decorated stoneware pieces from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries.
