Drug-jar (albarello)

Description

An Italian albarello or drug-jar of waisted cylindrical shape. On the centre-front is a portrait of a woman wearing a necklace in an oval frame which is surrounded by foliated, scroll work and sgraffito in blue, yellow and white. Similar to CG 36 B. These popular portrait pieces emphasize character rather than beauty. Sicilian, possibly Caltagirone.

Archival information

File of material relating to a pair of drug jars with heads in oval frames. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of objects (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from catalogue of sale (c. June 1981) issued by Sothebys in respect of the sale of contents of Somerhill, Tonbridge, Kent. This sale included a pair of Caltagirone Albarelli jars said to date from the eighteenth century and similar to the present objects. Somerhill items are described in the extract of the catalogue and illustration of one is present. Also present are Hunt Museum object comment sheets. In one (date unspecified), Timothy Wilson attributes provenance of the drug jars to Caltagirone and says they are not a pair but part of a group; in the second Hunt Museum object comment sheet (27 February 1997), a docent (named withheld), Hunt Museum, comments on the possible former contents of the drug jars; Hunt Museum collection survey form (date unspecified); extract from exhibition catalogue for 'Art Treasures in Thomond' held at Limerick Art Gallery (Limerick: Limerick Leader, 1952) which describes the drug jars.
