Maiolica dish

Description

A circular maiolica dish decorated with peacock feathers and geometric decoration. In the centre there is a white circle with a large arrow motif in centre. It was intended to hang on the wall. The meaning of the arrow is not known but may have pointed to the potters workshop. Italian, Deruta.

File of material relating to a large dish with arrow in centre. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified). Originally, object was referred to as maiolica but information card has been amended to suggest that the dish is possibly Deruta; Hunt Museum collection survey form (date unspecified); printout from database (date unspecified) which describes object; two Hunt Museum object comment sheets (dates unspecified) containing comments made about object by Timothy Wilson. Dates it to mid-sixteenth century and says it is probably Deruta. Also, states that it was 'possibly for a company of archers or a tavern, at the sign of the arrow. Comments that holes in the object may have been made to facilitate hanging.
