Description

A tea-bowl used in a Japanese tea-ceremony. The bowl is made of a series of coils visible on the outside. The bowl has been broken and repaired.

Archival information

File of material relating to a chawan or tea ceremony tea-bowl. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); photocopy of Hunt Museum object comment sheet (17 April 1996) containing comments made about object by Peter Francis. Dates the tea-bowl to eighteenth-century Japan. Makes reference to publication by Soame Jenyns entitled 'Japanese Pottery' (London: Faber and Faber, 1971); notes (date unspecified) which state that photograph of the tea-bowl was sent to Timothy Clark, Deputy Keeper of the Japanese Department, British Museum, who says it is probably Hagi ware and dated it to the nineteenth century. Notes also explain the process of Hagi ware makers.
