File of material relating to three silver spoons. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of objects (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (15 May 1996) containing comments made about MG 067 A by a docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum. Dates object to circa 1609-10 and remarks that it was assayed in London. Also describes the spoon and refers to a publication, Jackson (third edition, 1994). Comments that makers mark, a compass, is not known; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (27 June 1996) containing comments made about MG 067 A by Hugh Tait, British Museum. He dates the spoon to circa 1610; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about MG 067 A by John Cherry, British Museum. He questions if a 'W' inscribed on the spoon might refer to the name of the owner; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about MG 067 B by John Cherry, British Museum. He states that spoon is Continental and not English and dates it to the seventeenth century; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about MG 067 C by John Cherry, British Museum. States that this spoon probably dates from the seventeenth century and is not English; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (15 May 1996) containing comments made about MG 067 C by the same docent, Hunt Museum. States that possibly made around 1580 and that it is possibly English. Also, descriptive remarks about object; document (date unspecified) which describes all three spoons. Some differences between comments recorded here and elsewhere in the file. Dates MG 067 A to London, circa 1549-50. Dates MG 067 B to circa 1590. Dates MG 067 C to circa 1583; two photocopies of paper by Christopher A. Peal entitled 'English knopped latten spoons: part 2' published in 'The Connoisseur' (c. July 1970); photocopy of paper by Verite Reily Collins entitled 'Born with a Silver Spoon' published in 'The Antique Collector' (c. January-February 1996); letter, and photocopy of same (21 June 1967), from G. Barnett, The Priory, Hethersett, Norwich, to John Hunt, Senior. It is unclear which (if any) of the three present objects is discussed. Writes, 'Its [sic] by Christopher Tanner. As there is no date stamp I place it 1575-1585 as I know of other pieces he did during this period with no date stamp but with contemporary engraved dates. The 1624 on top of spoon is a later date'; letter, and photocopy of same (3 December 1983), from 'Ida,' Carrickroe, Baily, county Dublin, to Putzle [sic] (Gertrude Hunt), in relation to MG 067 A. Dates it to 1609 and London. Writes that the makers mark is not known, but according to Tim Kent, the compass mark was very common at that time.
