Description

An iron coif, to protect the neck and shoulder. It was probably hinged originally to allow it to be put on. It has been repaired. English or Spanish.

Archival information

File of material relating to a suit of armour. Includes document which comprises photocopies of object description sheets for each constituent part of the suit of armour (dates unspecified). Most of the object description sheets mention Craggaunowen Castle, county Clare, so probable that armour was displayed there; document (3 October 1995) which contains descriptive remarks made by Robert McLoughlin, 'Clan MacColin' re-enactment group, California, USA. He attributes various parts of the armour to different European countries, hesitantly in some cases (namely, England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France) and dates these objects to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; letter (4 October 1995) from Glenn Thompson (address withheld) to Mairead Dunlevy, Director, Hunt Museum. States that objects appear to date from circa 1450-1500 but recommends second opinion, perhaps from the Tower Museum, London.
