Description

A figure sculpture of Joachim and Anna, parents of Mary, in polychrome wood. The figures are shown embracing each other. Anna wears a long gown and veil and Joachim wears a tunic, boots and a turban. Flemish.

Refers to Craggaunowen Castle, county Clare, and object was probably displayed there for a period of time; photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum collection survey form (4 December 1996); three copies of a postcard with image of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (21 February 1997) containing comments made by a docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum. Outlines details of the lives of Joachim and Anna. Does not comment on the object; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about object by John Cherry, British Museum. Says object probably dates from the fifteenth century and that it has been heavily restored in modern times. Remarks about clothing worn by figures in carving that it is representative of what the carver thought was worn in biblical times; photocopy of extract from unidentified publication (date unspecified) which contains family tree of the Holy Kindred. Outlines that Anna married three times and each time had a daughter named Mary.
