Description

A large maiolica dish depicting a scene with two chariots being driven in opposite directions. There is a man on the ground tied between the two chariots. In the background soldiers and other figures look on. The scene is set in a rural landscape. It may depict the martyrdom of St Hippolytus.

Comment reads 'Malepa' and is initialled 'P.D.'; (date unspecified); Hunt Museum collection survey form (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (27 June 1996) containing remarks by Hugh Tait, formerly of the British Museum. Thinks that it dates from the nineteenth century and might be from the Cantagaglia workshop, Florence; photocopy of entry relating to Saint Hippolytus from James Bentley, 'A Calendar of Saints: The Lives of the Principal Saints of the Christian Year' (United Kingdom: Little, Brown and Company, 2000); photocopy of extract from 'Illustrated Handbook,' (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, c. 1964) which has image and description of Flemish painting entitled 'The Martyrdom of Saint Hippolytus'; photocopies of extracts from [dictionary of classical Greece] containing entries relating to Hector and Achilles Tatius (date unspecified).
