Description

This bronze bell dates from the 9th century. Bronze bells such as these were often used in monastic settings and would be rung to indicate a time for example for a call to pray. In Ireland bells often gained significance through their association with revered abbots or priests. Many monastic bells became treasured or revered items, being housed in elaborate bell shrines. This bell was found in Co. Westmeath.
