Jewel pendant

Description

A jewel pendant in gold and sapphire with a loop and ring and a sapphire is set in a high collet within a cushion frame. The reverse is decorated with a floral arabesque. English or German.

Provenance

File of material relating to a pendant jewel. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about object by John Cherry, British Museum. Thinks it probably dates from the sixteenth century; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (27 June 1996) containing comments made about object by Hugh Tait, formerly British Museum. Tait dates object to the sixteenth century, circa 1540, and thinks that the central stone may be a replacement; extract from exhibition catalogue in German for the Schmuckmuseum, Pforzheim (c. 1972) at which the jewel was exhibited. Includes image and description of object; transcription of description from the exhibition catalogue.
