Description

A crucifix figure in bronze with a crown of thorns. His eyes are open and the feet are nailed together. The loin-cloth is short and folded with a triangular piece hanging down in the centre. British or Irish.

File of material relating to a bronze crucifix figure. Includes photocopy of object description sheet including sketch of object (date unspecified). This document attributes object to fourteenth-century Germany but annotation states it possibly dates from the thirteenth century; photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (30 December 1997) containing comments made about object by Doctor Colum Hourihane. Attributes object to Britain or Ireland and refers to Ireland workmanship. Also, dates the figure to the fifteenth century; photocopy of extract from Sothebys catalogue of sale (29 March 1979) with image and description of a crucifix similar to present object. Annotation '9200' written on exhibition catalogue; unsigned incomplete letter to a docent, Hunt Museum, enclosing image and description in German of a crucifix figure held by the Schnutgen Museum, Cologne, which reminded writer of present object (24 February 1998).
