Silver pap-boat

Description

A plain silver pap-boat, oval in shape with a long wide lip and a curved base which fits comfortably in the hand. It is designed for feeding semi-solid food to infants or invalids. Made in Limerick about 1760, the mark of Joseph Johns, a lion rampant, is struck twice on the bottom accompanied by the paired initials W and I, which may indicate a wedding or christening gift. The initials of Johns: II, on either side of the lion, are accompanied by the word, Sterling.
