Maiolica jar

Description

A glazed maiolica jar decorated with the image of an angel with the inscription underneath TRODREVBARO. It has a lid with a central knob surrounded by floral motifs. The back is plain. Small jars such as this generally contained medication in tablet or lozenge form, in this case of rhubarba purgative.

File of material relating to an Italian maiolica jar. Includes object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified). Photocopy of photograph of object on verso; Hunt Museum collection survey form (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (date unspecified) which contains comments made about object by Timothy Wilson. Dates object to 1550s-70s and states that it is Italian, possibly made at Casteldurante. Also, that word inscribed on object, 'TRODREVBARO' possibly refers to rhubarb lozenges. Angels depicted on the jar should be referred to as seraphim and decoration around the top of the lid is referred to as 'alla porcellana' by Italians as early as the sixteenth century. This means, comments Wilson, that this decoration is in imitation of Chinese porcelain.
