Description

A figure sculpture of the Madonna and Child in limestone. The Virgin is crowned, with a pendant veil and wearing a long draped gown. Mary carries the Infant Jesus on her hip and is gently holding his foot. The top half of the child is missing. There are traces of original paint on the statue. Burgundy.

Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified); photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); document (date unspecified) which briefly describes present object and states that its original paint survives in places; photocopy of extract from publication edited by Szilvia Bodnar entitled, 'The Museum of Fine Arts Budapest: Guide' (Budapest: Corvina, [c. 1995]) which contains description and image of a painted limestone figure of Madonna and Child holding a bird, held in Budapest. Made in Champagne around the mid-fourteenth century; document comprising photocopied images of 'Our Lady of Melrose,' Melrose Abbey; photocopy of extract from publication by Paul Williamson entitled 'The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection: Medieval sculpture and works of art' (London: Philip Watson Publishing, 1987) which contains description and image of a figure of a Virgin and Child which came from Northern France, Île-de-France or Champagne, and is dated to circa 1250-75.
