Pyx (communion box)

Description

A pyx in silver, which is oval in shape with a hinged, flat lid and fastened by a decorated screw. The lid has the letters IHS inscribed in the centre with a pierced heart underneath. This is surrounded by a beaded ring from which a sunburst radiates. The back is inscribed with a sunburst, the instruments of the Passion and a cock. There is a suspension loop at the top. A pyx is a vessel in which consecrated bread is kept.
