Sibéal Riordan

Sibéal Riordan is an Irish visual artist and photographer based in Limerick, Ireland. Her work is informed by her own experience as a woman in contemporary Ireland, Irish history, feminism & our relationship with nature. She specialises in darkroom photography and analogue processes, but also works in the realm of digital photography, experimental sound, video and performance.  She has won the Photoshop.ie Award for traditional darkroom work and created a photobook with PhotoIreland and Inspirational arts as part of the Inspirational Arts Photography Awards 2020 of which she was a finalist.

The piece displayed is a work selected from an ongoing project exploring Danú, who was known as the goddess of nature in ancient Irish mythology. Sibéal explores her stories and what she symbolises through abstract analogue photography of the rural landscapes in which she spent her formative years. In a time of difficulty for our natural landscape through its destruction and the depletion of its resources, it is important to look back at a time when we had reverence and respect for our lands, and feared the repercussions of our actions were we to mistreat it.
