Crayfish model
Description
An articulated, ivory model of a crayfish, a creepy crawly of the sea. It is not known where this crayfish originates but similar examples come from Japan. It may be a good luck charm, the word for shrimp, ebi 海老, translates literally as “old man of the sea," suggesting longevity. It is said that the spiny shell of lobster protects people from demons (oni 鬼) and brings good luck.
