Tamlyn Young

Tamlyn Young is an illustrator with an interest in the relationship between the body and its environment. Her work interrogates how we create a sense of place in urban environments with their multiplicity of overlapping micro narratives, histories and memories, and how these influence human interaction. Working at the intersection of the physical and digital, Tamlyn’s practice takes a playful, multi-layered approach to visual storytelling. It explores the relationship between the static printed artefact and the digital storytelling potentials of augmented reality with the aim of creating a more immersive experience for the viewer. Young was born in South Africa, She moved to Limerick in 2014 and currently lectures in Graphic Design Communication and Animation Motion Design, at Limerick School of Art and Design, TUS.

Misplace is one of a triptych of augmented reality prints that began as a process of questioning notions of Home and Displacement, both at a personal level and in a broader socio-political context. The definition of Homelessness has evolved to include those who have a roof over their head but remain without the security of a fixed shelter. How does one establish a sense of place and belonging under such conditions and what are the psychosocial implications? The augmented reality extension of the print questions whether Home can be reduced to simply the opposite of Homeless or whether it is an intangible sensation that extends beyond the four walls of a fixed shelter.
