Anne Callanan

Curator’s Choice for September, 2024

Artist's Biography

Born in Northern Ireland, Anne’s early inspiration came from her grandmother making exquisite fine linen, decorated with the craft of sprigging and her mother’s eye for collecting antiques.

With a rich educational background that spans Textile Art and Fashion Styling from Central St Martins, London; Art History from Trinity College Dublin; and Classical Drawing and Painting from Florence, Italy, Anne seamlessly blends her lifelong passion for materials, texture, and colour with classical techniques. Her work evokes a deep emotional response, exploring themes such as the human figure and condition, landscapes, and still life.
Working mainly in oil and acrylic paints, drawing and sometimes using gold leaf, Anne’s work reflects her love of simple forms, colour and diagonal abstract shapes, created using a limited palette.

Working with different media and techniques, she also uses photography as a way to log her artistic pursuits. Anne has spent the last 20 years in Second/Third Level Education teaching, art history and continuing to make art plus being a homemaker with 2 kids. She has exhibited in group
and solo exhibitions in France, the UK and Ireland, and has work in private and public collections in Ireland, the UK and the USA.
Anne has just returned from France where she was on a 3-week residency with a group from Los Angeles, California. Last year Anne was also lucky enough to spend a month painting in Holland on a residency with a group from Mexico and Spain. She has been invited to give a lecture in Mexico City this year to undergraduates and private collectors on the role of women in art and mothers in the artworld.
