Artist's Biography

Born 1982 Co. Galway. Lorraine McDonnell graduated from the Crawford College of Art & Design in 2005 with a B.A (Hons) in Fine Art. After college she continued her artistic career working from various studios in Cork city. In 2009 she co-founded Basement Project Space, an artist led initiative, where she was involved in the running of events and exhibitions whilst maintaining her studio practice. Following the closure of BPS in 2012 she moved studio to Camden Palace Hotel. In 2015 Lorraine won the Screaming Pope Prize for best artist at the KFest music and arts festival in Kilorglin Co. Kerry. In 2018 she moved to Charleville, Co. Cork and currently works here from her home studio.

Artist Statement

Lorraine primarily works with acrylic on canvas, other mediums she uses are acrylic inks, markers and posca paint markers on paper. Her working method often combines stencilling, airbrushing, painting and drawing to create her pieces. The majority of subject matter in Lorraine’s work stems from her deep interest in human and animal anatomy, she likes to dissect, fragment and distort imagery of anatomical forms which inform the structure of her compositions.
