Friends of the Hunt Museum Lunchtime Lecture.
“Shannongrove and other gorgets- understanding Late Bronze Age goldwork in Ireland” with Mary Cahill.
In Ireland in the Late Bronze Age period, c. 1000-700 BC, there was a great expansion in the production of metalwork including many new types of gold ornaments. Amongst these is a rare group of elaborate sheet gold ornaments known as gorgets. Only nine of these have survived including a splendid example found at Shannongrove, Co. Limerick, in the eighteenth century. This lecture will show how Shannongrove and other gorgets were made, how they function and what they represent in the wider world of Irish and European prehistory.
Mary Cahill, FSA, was formerly Keeper of Irish Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland. She specialises in prehistoric gold, history of collections and antiquarianism. She has published widely on these subjects including in the North Munster Antiquarian Journal.
