About the Exhibition

RADIUS is the 25th Annual Limerick School of Art & Design 2nd Year Painting Exhibition.

Continuing in the approach of innovative exhibition formats for the Annual Painting Show, each student created two individual circular artworks.

One of the circular panels relates to the students’ interpretation from the Hunt Museum’s important collection which encompasses over 2600 works including artworks by Picasso, Giacometti and Renoir as well as vitrines full of curious artefacts.

The other panel relates to the interconnectedness of nature, environment, gender, music and responds to the environs of the Hunt Museum and beyond, including the River Shannon.

Round artworks on a wall: a child with a crowned bird on a colourful background, butterflies on a marbled surface, and a bright geometric piece.
A collection of colourful, circular artworks on a white wall. Each disc features unique scenes, including abstract faces, a fish, and a scenic waterfront.
Four round art pieces on a wall. Centrepiece: a vibrant red statue; others include children, abstract cityscape, and architectural elements. Colourful and eclectic.
A circular painting on a wall shows two figures: one sitting, the other standing with arms raised. Above, hands reach towards a sun, lanterns hang. The scene feels whimsical and serene.

Circular artworks are displayed on a white wall. They feature diverse themes: abstract patterns, a fish in water, cityscapes, and a person by a river. The mood is imaginative.

Artists throughout history have investigated and explored these contexts and in today’s world of turmoil and change, these issues have become pertinent to how contemporary artists create and engage with the real world.

Alongside the wall display of over 60 circular pieces each student will have their own projection of their Wunderkammer (Room of Wonder) a projected image of research objects, images and curious items that relate to their subject area and sense of investigation.

The Wunderkammer, also known as Cabinets of Curiosity, date back to Renaissance Europe when collectors and explorers began collecting exotic and bizarre objects and exhibiting them in wonder rooms and thus forming the basis of the museum today.

The painting students’ interpretation of this idea breathes new life into this subject, and offers diverse and imaginative responses from today’s visual thinkers. The students’ Wunderkammer images exist as a set of postcards that are available for purchase at the exhibition.
