The returning dead were very much part of Irish tradition. They might returen becuase they were not truly dead, having been taken by the fairies. But the ghosts of even the definitively dead were believed by many to linger or permanently in their communities, being particularly associated with graveyards and with their own homes. Drawing on rich folklore sources, this lecture, led by Dr. Clodagh Tait, explores Irish beliefs about where the dead were thought to appear, what they sought, and how the living responded to their ghostly visits.
