Archival information
File of material relating to a polychrome statue of Saint Anne with young Virgin and Child. Includes Hunt Museum collection survey form (4 December 1996); statement (date unspecified) by Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, in relation to present object which states that it is listed in a deed of gift dated 1991 by Gertrude Hunt, where it is listed as number 29. However, annotation on this document by Holland (11 November 1996) that this item was confused with another similar object, ownership being retained by John Hunt, Junior, but lent to the Hunt Museum for display; letter in German, and translation of same (5 July 1974), from Doctor Alfred Schadler, Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich, to Gertrude Hunt, Drumleck, Baily, county Dublin, in relation to object in her collection of which Schadler received photographs. Writes in relation to the possible Naumburg head with bandage that it probably dates from the late thirteenth century and obviously belonged to a group of figures. In relation to the 'beautiful wooden statue of Anna Selbdritt,' present object, Schadler states that it was in a collection in Munich and was auctioned on 27-29 September 1967 by Weinmuller, Munich, under the name of 'Leinberger-Kreis, Master of Altottinger Kirchentueren (Church doors) around 1520-1530.' Also, that it then went to Sothebys on 17 November 1970, and was dated in its catalogue of sale to 1540. Schadler writes that he does not agree that 'this very individually created statue is a work of Leinberger nor a creation of the 'Master of the Altottinger Kirchentueren (Church doors).' He thinks this statue is a Bavarian parallel to the 'Nuremberg Madonna' in the German National Museum and that one could be reminded of the earlier works of Peter Dell, during the period 1495-1522. In his letter, Schadler also discusses two crucifixes. It is not clear that these objects are held by the Hunts. Schadler describes one as, 'The crucifix with the Dolorosa - according to the inscription on an older photograph in the Bavarian National Museum this group was in private ownership in Vienna. The bizarre contours in the treatment of the body and folds in the dress could be attributed to the sculptor Johann Michael Fischer Stylistic parallels in Upper Austria are works of Johann Peter Schwanthaler.' Also discusses a wooden crucifix which he attributes to Austria and says is comparable to the style in the 'lead crucifix by Johann Baptist Hagenauer 1753 in the Geistlichen Schatzkammer (Holy Treasury Chamber) in Vienna; extract, and photocopy thereof, from Sothebys catalogue of sale (17 November 1970) containing image and description of present object; black and white photograph of statue (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from unidentified publication (date unspecified) which comprises genealogy of the Holy Kindred, including Saint Anne; photocopies of extracts from at least two unidentified publications (dates unspecified) comprising images of representations of Saint Anne and the Holy Kindred; booklet in German entitled 'Bildewerke der Münchener Frauenkirche' (c. 1976) containing image of similar statue. Photocopy of relevant image also present; note (date unspecified) in two different hands. Section in first hand reads, 'Anistellungs katalog 'Spalgothe in Salzburg.' Die Sangoten Salzburg 1976.' Section in second hand reads, 'Sculpture illustrated Anna Selbdritt (Munich master) in Cedroom'; also present in the file is photocopy of note (date unspecified) which reads, 'Leinberger Niederbayern.' Original of note not present.
