Description

A drawing in wax crayon and ink on paper, Four Cats / Plat del Dia, by Pablo Picasso. It is a menu card for a cafe called in Catalan Els Quatre Gats (the Four Cats), depicting a waiter carrying a bottle in one hand and holding a panel inscribed Plat del Dia (dish of the day) in the other. There is a blank panel below. It is signed P. Ruiz Picasso, the form of his signature used by Picasso until 1901.

File of material relating to a drawing, '4 Cats Plat del Dia' by Pablo Picasso. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); document comprising biography of Picasso and description of present object and another Picasso drawing, 'Buste de Femme' also in the Hunt Museum (MG 144); introduction to an exhibition of works by Picasso (date unspecified) entitled 'Picasso ad Arona' which appears to have been held at an unnamed institution in Arona, Italy; leaflet comprising a diary of art and culture and menu for the Four Cats Café, the restaurant for which Picasso drew the present object (19 January 2000). Written in Catalan; newspaper article, and photocopy thereof, by John Russell, 'The man who walked ahead of himself: An appreciation of Pablo Picasso' (c. 1972). Briefly mentions the present object; copy of letter (27 May 2005) from Dorothy Redmond, Research Assistant, Hunt Museum, to The Director, Museu Picasso, Barcelona. Writes that it is known that John Hunt, Senior, and Gertrude Hunt owned the drawing by the 1940s but the Hunt Museum has no information about it prior to that date. Requests to know if addressee has further information about provenance.
