Cosmetic Jar with motif of two Monkeys

Description

An anhydrite jar with a narrow neck and a broad everted rim which is chipped. The body of the jar is decorated in relief with a row of monkeys with long tails. Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, Second Intermediate Period.

File of material relating to a jar with monkey motif. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); letter (date unspecified) from Neal Spencer, Department of Egypt Antiquities, British Museum, to a docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum. Writes that in doing some research, he came across an anhydrite jar with relief decoration of two monkeys sold at a Sothebys auction in London on 10 June 1947. States that it looks like present object. Spencer writes that the British Library copy of the relevant catalogue of sale is annotated with the name of the purchaser, Calmann. Suggests that this may be Hans Calmann, an art dealer and gallery owner based in London, between 1930s-50s. Questions if it is possible that the Hunts purchased the object from Calmann or that he bought the object on their behalf.
