Ivory trumpet

Description

Oliphant, a curved ivory, side-blown trumpet made from the tusk of an elephant. There is a brass rim fitted to the open end of the trumpet and a round mouth-piece near the narrow closed top. Possibly Italian.

File of material relating to a trumpet. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing remarks made by John Cherry, British Museum. Suggests that the attribution might be eleventh-century India or Africa between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries; photocopy of extract from 'The Burlington Magazine' (c. April 1932) which describes a carved ivory horn referred to as 'seventeenth-century Oliphant.' Photocopy of image of this horn also present.
