File of material relating to a group of seventeen objects owned by the National Gallery of Ireland and loaned to the Hunt Museum. These seventeen objects are part of a larger group bequeathed by John Hunt, Senior, to the National Gallery of Ireland. Includes lists of the objects and brief descriptions of some of them, including those objects still held by the National Gallery of Ireland (c. 2 December 1996-13 September 2005); photocopies of Hunt Museum collection survey forms (13 February 1996-16 February 1996) completed by Cliodna Devitt, conservator, for eleven of the objects. These forms analyse the objects commenting on the materials used and their assembly; Christmas card with image of one of the objects, a figure of the Virgin and Child (NGI 12064) attributed to seventeenth-century France; photocopy of letter (9 December 1997) from Pippa Shirley, Metalwork, Silver and Jewellery Department, Victoria and Albert Museum, to Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum. Comments on a Spanish chalice (NGI 12042). She thinks it has Hispanic origins and encloses photocopies of images of similar objects. She has been unable to identify the mark on the object. Annotation states that it is probably a contraction of the name of the silversmith. Also that, the appearance of the mark, and the style of the object (with the applied enamel boss and pouncing) are both very typical of the late 16th early 17th century, the so-called Philip I, Herrera or Official Style, photocopy of notice of sale by S.J. Phillips, 113 New Bond Street, London, with image of an early Spanish silver-gilt chalice. This notice was published in 'The Connoisseur' (volume 101, number 440, c. April 1938); correspondence (14 June 1993-9 January 2003) exchanged between the Hunt Museum and various employees, National Gallery of Ireland, in relation to the extension of the loan of the present objects; condition reports (21 January 1997) for twelve of the objects completed by Maighread MacParland, National Gallery of Ireland. The condition reports describe the objects and note any damage; photocopy of extract from the 'Catalogue of the Exhibition of Ecclesiastical Art at the Whitworth Art Gallery Oxford Road, Manchester 15 (c. March 1958) which includes reference to a tapestry table carpet from a monastery in Spain and dated to the early sixteenth century, lent by John Hunt, Senior; photocopy of extract from 'Brass and Brass Rubbings' (London: Blandford Press, 1971) by Clare Gittings, which includes images and descriptions of mass vestments; photocopy of letter (3 February 1999) from Godfrey H. Evans, Curator of European Art, National Museums of Scotland, to a docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum sending photocopy of photograph and description of figure held in his museum, Angel with the Arma Christi. This object might be similar to NGI 12043. The figure held in Scotland is dated to circa 1480 and is from the Lower Rhineland region of Germany, probably Kalkar; photocopy of extract from unidentified publication (date unspecified) which treats of the Singland Bell.
