Ringed pin

Description

A pin in bronze and enamel. It has a flat annular ring bearing two panels each of bright red and yellow enamel. The ring is attached to the pin by a hinged forward curving strap on the top of the ring. This pin would have been used to fasten a cloak.

File of material relating to a cloak pin. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); extract from exhibition catalogue in German for exhibition held at the Schmuckmuseum, Pforzheim (c. 1972), which describes object; photocopy of this extract from exhibition catalogue also present; card (date unspecified) conveying comments made by Tom Fanning about object. He dates it to the eighth century and remarks that it is a pseudo-penannular ring brooch; photocopy of this card also present; photocopy of letter (2 June 1993) from Susan Youngs, Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities, British Museum, to Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum. She comments on several objects in the Hunt Museum. In relation to present object, writes that there is one in her collection which is similar. Her pin was found with a metal detector and 'has a slightly dubious provenance of Stanford Bridge, South Yorkshire.' Also, there is a third similar pin in the Yorkshire museum. She agrees with Professor Etienne Rynnes dating of the object to the fifth century.
