The Admiral Vernon ladle

Description

A punch ladle in silver with a boat-shaped bowl and a turned wooden handle. On either side of the bowl there is a lip for pouring. The bowl is inset with a medallion commemorating the taking of Porto Bello (Gulf of Mexico) by Admiral Edward Vernon on 22 November 1739. The medallion shows a male figure in 18th century dress, with sword in hand, behind him is a canon and ship. The reverse has an image of six ships. The medallion is inscribed: He took Portobello with six ships only.

File of material relating to a silver punch ladle. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified). States that object commemorates the taking of Portobello by Admiral Edward Vernon in 1739; photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); photocopy of Hunt Museum object comment sheet (26 February 1997) containing comments made about object by a docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum. Notes information about the battle of Portobello; notes written by a second docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum (10 March 1999). States that one of the midshipmen aboard Vernon's flagship was a cousin of the 2nd Viscount Midleton. Suggests that if the Midleton Mace and Limoges Chasse came from Lord Midletons collection, present object may have same provenance; notes which describe object by Margaret Walsh (date unspecified). Photocopy of image of base of object, where inscription recorded, also present; note (date unspecified) in the hand of Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, refers to publication, 'Ceramics', in which it is stated that a great many objects commemorative of Vernon's taking of Portobello were made between 1740-43; notice for an exhibition of art (c. October 2000) which is illustrated with image of painting by Peter Monamy entitled 'Capture of Porto Bello'; photocopy of extract from a catalogue of sale (date unspecified) with image and description of a London delft mug with portrait of Vernon.
