Statue of a male figure

Statue of a male figure

Description

A figure of man in wood (acacia negevensis). The figure is nude, in a hieratic stance with the face, arms and feet missing. The figure rests on a modern stand. In the details of its carving, especially of the ear and the groove round the head, and the fact that it is bearded, the statue is closer to Greek work of the later sixth century BC than Egypt figures. This piece may have been an early Egypt carving which was reworked centuries later by a Greek carver. The piece has been carbon dated to c. 2250 BC, Egypt 12th dynasty.
