Archival information
File of material relating to a painting which depicts the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. Includes photocopy of an almost incomplete object description sheet (date unspecified); photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); transcription of text of label which described object in a foundation building display (c. 1996). Notes that painting also includes Saint Nicholas and Saint Anthony and that it is possibly by the Lichenthal Master; notes (date unspecified) which describe the painting. Notes that it is from the shutter of a late medieval German altarpiece; Hunt Museum collection survey form (4 December 1996); note of conversation, and rough notes of same, (10 April 2005) between a docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum, and Doctor Bernd Konrad (address withheld). States that Konrad thinks the artist of this object is Bernhard Strigel (born 1460) who worked in Swabia; photocopy of extract from the 'Oxford Companion to Art' containing entry relating to Strigel. It notes that he painted a number of altarpieces; a second photocopy of extract from same publication gives details about a painter named Bartel Zeitblom (c. 1460-c. 1520) who worked in the Ulm region and supplied a number of Swabian towns with altarpieces; copy of letter (26 May 2005) from Fiona Davern, Registrar, Hunt Museum, to Konrad. Konrad is currently researching the secularisation of monasteries and convents in Bavaria in 1852. Davern understands that a catalogue exists of the sale of works from this secularisation process and wishes to know if Konrad might ascertain if an entry for this painting is in the catalogue; photocopy of reply (30 May 2005) from Konrad to Davern. Comments that a lot of panels by Strigel have survived but the number of his works lost or destroyed at the time of the Reformation and the Thirty Years War is unknown. Mentions two publications which catalogue Strigels works and he has also checked his own files and the 1852 catalogue but there is no painting comparable to the present object; printout from website which comprises biography of Bartholomaus Zeitblom (13 April 2005). Mentions that he collaborated with Strigel; copy of letter (9 April 2005) from Davern to John Gibbs, Secretary, Westminster Roman Catholic Diocese Trustee, Archbishops House, Ambrosden Avenue, London, seeking assistance in tracing the provenance of the painting which belonged to the Westminster Diocesan Trust until 1969; printout of e-mail (16 July 2005) from Father Nicholas Schofield, Diocesan Archivist, to Dorothy Redmond, provenance researcher, Hunt Museum. Writes that he is not sure how easy it will be to locate information about the painting. Also though, he is working on a history of Saint James', Spanish Place, London, and recently discovered that an Old Master that had hung in the presbytery dining room was auctioned in the late 1960s to fund a building conversion. Puts forward this information as a lead; photocopy of extract from a Sothebys catalogue of sale (c. 3 December 1969) which contains description of present object. Mentions that it is the property of the Westminster Diocesan Trust and that the painting is attributed to the Master of the 'Life of the Virgin'; price list for this auction (c. 3 December 1969). Present object is priced at £3,400; slip of paper issued by Sothebys (2 December 1969) which notes that John Hunt, Senior, placed an unsuccessful bid of £3,400 for the painting; letter (28 September 1995) from Father Placid Murray, O.S.B., Glenstal Abbey, Murroe, county Limerick, enclosing photocopies of extracts from 'The Oxford Dictionary of Saints' (Oxford: Calendon Press, [1978]) which relate to the three saints depicted in the painting; notes (13 October 1997) relating to Saint Nicholas and Saint Sebastian; document entitled 'Project Synopsis' (13 April 2005). Thrust of project seems to be the acquisition of information about current object. Summarises known information. Also mentions that Konrad suggested looking at the collection of the Swiss diocese of Chur; document in English and German (13 April 2005) perhaps compiled by a docent, Hunt Museum, summarising Konrads comments. Includes catalogue of works in German, extract is headed 'Werkkatalog Kirchliche Werke.'
