First Date, Peoples Park by Hugh McMahon

Location Settings is an exhibition of paintings by Hugh McMahon. The title is a reference to the artist’s process of image making; paintings made in the studio based on sketches made on location. The paintings are a reimagining of a time and place without making use of lens based or digital tools. The paintings are based on favourite locations; swimming spots, parks, gardens, local scenery and landmarks. The locations are recognisable but not in a photographic sense, rather they are the reimaginings of a location or scene through the mind’s eye. These paintings are less concerned with how a place looks than how it feels to be there.

Hugh Mc Mahon grew up outside Limerick in Coonagh and studied painting in Limerick School of Art and Design. He makes paintings, drawings, illustrations and he has published several comics based on local history and folklore including Limerick Slang, Limerick Folktales, Tall Tales from Limerick City, Irish Faery Magic and Three Bridges. In 2015, he was a founding member of Phoenix Creative Arts Psychotherapy Centre PCPC, a charity providing a creative arts psychotherapy service promoting positive mental health for young people in Limerick City. He lives and works in Limerick City.

This exhibition of paintings is on display in the Hunt Museum Café from July to September 2022. All original artwork is for sale or giclée prints of each painting are available for purchase.
