Limerick, Ireland – The Hunt Museum proudly launched Kwaidan – Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn on Thursday, 5th December at 5 pm. This remarkable exhibition features works by 20 Japanese and 20 Irish artists, each interpreting ghostly tales from Lafcadio Hearn’s Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (1904).
The launch was graced by special guests His Excellency, Mr. Norio Maruyama, Ambassador of Japan to Ireland, Maria Donoghue, Limerick Councillor and featuring artists and exhibition originators Stephen Lawlor, Kate MacDonagh and Ed Miliano. Attendees celebrated the cultural ties between Ireland and Japan through this innovative exhibition, which will run at the Hunt Museum until 22nd February 2025.
This exhibition is the culmination of a creative collaboration that began in 2017 when Irish artist Stephen Lawlor encountered Hearn’s writings while exhibiting in Tokyo. Together with artists Kate MacDonagh and Ed Miliano, Lawlor brought together Japanese and Irish artists to explore the rich themes of folklore and storytelling that resonate through Hearn’s works.
During the launch, students from LSAD presented a special gift of a book of printers to His Excellency, Mr. Norio Maruyama, Ambassador of Japan to Ireland, inspired by the Kwaidan – Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn exhibition.
Kwaidan – Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn is presented in partnership with SO Fine Art Editions, Culture Ireland, and the Department of Foreign Affairs. Following its run at the Hunt Museum, the exhibition will tour venues in both Japan and Ireland, further celebrating the enduring cultural ties between the two nations.
