Helena Grimes

Helena Grimes, is an Irish artist and illustrator based in Limerick, originally from Longford. She has exhibited frequently nationally and internationally. Her work has been purchased for several private collections in Ireland, the UK and the USA, as well as municipal art collections.

Helena Grimes’ work Hoarding onto Memories is a reflection of time past and how change can bring out fear. The artist uses the work as a way to tease the subconscious with symbols of nostalgia, a way of creating a feeling of safety and optimism within the viewer. Often in times of hardship, we seek out the familiar to regain a status of control. To look forward we are reluctant to do so before glancing backwards. Nostalgia is often found within media – it is a way of bringing people together and creating connections. As people grow older or change, move home, change work, study etc – a sure way to regain a moment of closeness is to reflect.

Grimes’ work is a juxtaposition of personal and social commentary. It addresses timeless themes of anxiety, humour, power and regeneration, which become infused with the artist’s innermost thoughts, mythology and fragments of her imagination. Humour is used to tackle very serious subjects in hope of making them more accessible to a wider audience.
